About Us

KEPULAWAN is a brand that focuses on introducing artisanal Indonesian handicrafts to the world. It is a combination of the Indonesian words ‘kepulauan’ (archipelago) and ‘awan’ (cloud). It relates to the brand’s origins on Cheung Chau, an outlying island in Hong Kong, where blue cloud-filled skies are part of the lush scenery. Each product purchased directly supports skilled artisans and small businesses in Indonesia.

Our Artisans

The Indonesian artisans who manufacture our products are mostly women and stay-at-home mums. They hand-weave bags and create other handicrafts to support their children and families. We also work with small local businesses who produce diverse handmade items.

All materials used are from Indonesia. The artisans select materials and advise us on which are best suited for each product. Depending on the intricacy of the design, each item will take between 1-4 weeks to create by hand. We work directly with the makers of our products. Our payments go straight to the artisans and their families.

KEPULAWAN’S FOUNDER

Maya is a native Indonesian from Jakarta who now lives in Hong Kong. She enjoys travelling and collecting fabrics from around the world. Her travels fuelled her passion for showcasing Indonesian artisanship to a wider audience as she’s realised that the beauty of Indonesian workmanship is not widely known. As a small business owner herself, she hopes to support more women-owned businesses in Indonesia while highlighting the fine workmanship of Indonesian artisans.
